The Daily Yonder blog reported Jan. 8 that "the percentage of people living in poverty increased from 15.8 percent of those living in rural counties in 2007, before the recession began, to 18.3 percent in 2011."

Suez Environnement (SEV), the second- biggest waste and water utility, will begin charging residents of the northern French city of Dunkirk variable water rates that depend on income, size of household and usage.

USDA updates information on conditions and trends in rural income, poverty and welfare

The USDA’s Economic Research Service (ERS) has provided an update of conditions and trends in the areas of rural income, poverty, and welfare as of Sept. 17. ERS research in this area focuses on the economic, social, and demographic factors that affect the income and poverty status of rural residents and their participation in federal assistance programs, including food assistance programs.
