New national community facilities legislation announced in RCAP community

Rep. Steve Southerland II (R-Fla.) announced April 8 that he intends to introduce the Building Rural Communities Act later this week in Congress. He made the announcement while on a visit to Marianna, Fla., a community that the Rural Community Assistance Partnership (RCAP) has been working with on its water and wastewater systems.

EPA webinar: Innovative energy-conservation measures at wastewater treatment facilities

On Thursday, May 17, 2012, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. EST, EPA will host a webinar on innovative energy-conservation measures at wastewater treatment facilities. Improving energy efficiency is an ongoing challenge for water-sector utilities. While energy costs often represent 25 to 30 percent of a plant's total operation and maintenance costs, they also represent the largest controllable cost of providing water and wastewater services.

Interim report evaluates combined heat and power technologies for wastewater treatment facilities

EPA is announcing the release of an interim report—“Evaluation of Combined Heat and Power Technologies for Wastewater Facilities”—which serves as a planning tool for wastewater professionals and provides an examination of commonly used and emerging combined heat and power (CHP) technologies for converting anaerobic digester gas to electrical power and process heat.
