Perdue vetoes fracking bill; GOP accuses governor of 'flip-flop'

Gov. Bev Perdue vetoed legislation on Sunday [July 1] that would have paved the way for North Carolina to drill for natural gas through a water and chemical intensive process known as fracking. It is the Democratic governor’s third veto of major Republican-backed legislation — all in the past four days.

National Ground Water Awareness Week

National Ground Water Awareness Week is March 11 to 17. During the week, EPA and other organizations that are concerned about water resources will promote public awareness through various educational events and publications. Forty-four percent of America’s population regularly depends on ground water for its drinking water supply — reason enough to be ground water aware. Another reason is that ground water quantity and quality can strongly impact the environment.

EPA's Watershed Academy webinar: Nitrate in Ground Water

Join the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for a webcast titled "Nitrogen and Phosphorus Pollution Series: Nitrate in Ground Water" on Tuesday March 29, 2011, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm (EDT). This webcast will highlight an emerging issue of increased nitrate loading to ground water, a growing national concern. According to EPA’s most recent data, public water systems using ground water as a drinking source serve over 300 million people nationwide.
