Reuters: World set to use much more wastewater - U.N.-backed study

OSLO, Sept 5 (Reuters) - The world is set to use far more treated wastewater to help irrigate crops and feed a rising population as fresh water supplies dry up, a team of U.N.-backed experts said Sept. 5.

A study led by Japan's Tottori University and U.N. University's Canadian-based Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH) forecast "a rapid increase in the use of treated wastewater for farming and other purposes worldwide".

EPA has released a report on emerging technologies for wastewater treatment and in-plant wet weather management to assist municipal wastewater utility owners and operators, local governments, engineers, and planners find information on new wastewater treatment and in-plant wet-weather management technologies.  The document includes technical and cost information to assist users in considering using more efficient, sustainable, and cost-effective wastewater treatment and in-plant wet-weather management technologies.

EPA has made available online information on the uses and benefits of decentralized wastewater treatment and examples of where they have played an effective role in a community's wastewater treatment infrastructure. Decentralized wastewater treatment consists of a variety of onsite approaches for collection, treatment, dispersal, and reuse of wastewater and can be a sustainable and appropriate option for communities and homeowners.
