USDA Rural Development: Helping to put Americans to work

Annual report reflects administration's drive to create opportunity in rural regions

WASHINGTON (USDA)- Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack provided highlights of USDA Rural Development fiscal year (FY) 2011 investments in job-creating businesses, infrastructure and housing for Americans living in rural communities across the nation on Jan. 17. According to estimates, Rural Development investments created or saved about 440,000 jobs last year.

Reader's Digest ranks water/wastewater operators among 10 jobs Americans can't do without

In a recent article, the popular Reader's Digest provided a list of the "10 Jobs Americans Can’t Live Without." Many of the profession are in the public-service sector, working for utilities or essential security-related services like the police or fire protection. Number 2 on its list was water/wastewater treatment plant and system operators.
