March 22 every year is World Water Day. It is an initiative that grew out of the 1992 U.N. Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro. A website started in 2001 serves as a community space and repository where people can upload their WWD event activities and reports.

This year's theme is "Water for Cities: Responding to the Urban Challenge." While cities are very important for a variety of reasons - demographically, economically, reasons of efficiency - RCAP's focus is rural areas. RCAP believes that cities cannot exist without the existence and support of rural areas. In the United States, it is the rural areas that provide food and other natural resources that sustain the urban populations and economies.

In this video message, RCAP Executive Director Robert Stewart brings a message on this day of marking the importance of water in the United States and around the world.
