OPTIONAL WORKSHOP
Energy Audits at Small Utilities
Thursday, September 17, 2009
1:00 – 5:00 p.m.
Marriott Key Bridge

In this workshop, technical assistance providers will learn approaches for assisting small drinking water and wastewater utilities in decreasing their energy usage. The workshop will cover:

  1. Reviewing your energy bill (electric) – what does it include beyond “pay the following amount”?
  2. What is the design capacity of the facility you are operating (responsible for)?
  3. How much energy is each piece of equipment (component) consuming?
  4. How much energy is each process consuming?
  5. What data do you need to gather and record?
  6. Are there tools available to help in this process? Where are they?
  7. What equipment should be assessed first? How do you assess it?
  8. Your largest industry (consumer) left town. Now what do you do?
  9. How can you calculate the energy savings from the changes an audit suggests?

Workshop participants can bring a utility’s electric bill, photos or specifications of equipment, or other information to contribute to the discussions, or can use the trainer’s examples. Participants will not need a computer for this workshop, but should bring a calculator.

The workshop will be conducted by Joseph C. Cantwell, P.E. of SAIC/Energy Systems Group. Mr. Cantwell has extensive experience performing energy audits at small utilities and leading training sessions to build these skills among water and wastewater professionals. Mr. Cantwell recommends that prior to attending this workshop, all participants become familiar with the best practices/case studies in the appendices of EPA’s Energy Management Guidebook.
