Is your system putting the cart before the horse?

There is a menace threatening many of the nation's small water and wastewater systems today. It is a problem that has the potential to endanger the lives of thousands and damage millions of dollars in equipment.

This threat doesn't directly involve angry terrorists, furry creatures who are just moments from death and feel the urge to drown their sorrows in your well, or even the much maligned e coli bacteria.

According to a report released just last week by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, only six of 75 U.S. metropolitan areas received the department's highest marks for their ability to communicate during a disaster, five years after the September 11, terrorist attacks.

Interactive Sampling Guide for Drinking Water System Operators

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has produced the Community-Based Water Resiliency (CBWR) Tool. The CBWR Tool includes more than 400 tools and resources to enhance your community's resiliency to water service disruptions. A main component of the tool is the self assessment, which provides users with questions tailored to their stakeholder group and culminates in a self-assessment summary report. The report details the strengths and weaknesses of the users' community's resiliency and recommends tools and resources that can be used to enhance resiliency.
